Phyllis Walker’s personal mission is to combine art, advocacy, and entrepreneurship to empower survivors of domestic abuse.  Her two-fold mission is directed toward informing the public on issues of domestic violence, while empowering survivors in need through Esperanza! A Woman’s Hope, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization focused on providing scholarships to Georgia’s survivors of domestic violence who are returning to school for job skills upgrade. Her outreach toward victims of domestic violence has included volunteer activities at an Atlanta women’s correctional facility, crisis line assistance at a battered women’s shelter, court room assistance for victims seeking protective orders, advocating in connection with legislation mandated to assist victims of stalking and domestic violence, participation on local task forces, radio and television appearances, and speaking on topics relevant to these issues.

On behalf of Esperanza! A Woman’s Hope, Phyllis received a “Making A Difference for Women” award from the Soroptimist International / Atlanta Chapter and was a “Turknett Leadership Character” award nominee.  She additionally appeared on Veria TV’s “The Art of Living Gallery Show” segment titled “Overcoming Adversity”, featuring a vignette of her life and work as both a fine art photographer and social entrepreneur.

ESPERANZA! A WOMAN’S HOPE, INC.

Mission / Values / Goals:

Esperanza! A Woman’s Hope, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the socio-economic well being of Georgia’s battered women and their children.

Through a project targeted toward assisting survivors of domestic violence, who are moving forward with their lives, Esperanza! A Woman’s Hope offers scholarships leading to job skills upgrade at state funded vo-tech schools, community colleges, and four-year universities.

One hundred percent of all financial contributions made to the Esperanza! A Woman’s Hope Scholarship Fund is directed toward tuition assistance, including related costs and programs to benefit Georgia’s survivors of domestic violence.

Esperanza! A Woman’s Hope is pro-active and community oriented.  This organization serves traditional, minority, Hispanic, and multi-cultural populations in the state of Georgia, including women disabled from domestic abuse.  A fundamental belief of Esperanza! A Woman’s Hope is that the economic autonomy resulting from career development and job skills upgrade creates stability and cohesion, both in the lives of battered women and their children, while positively impacting the communities in which they reside.

A percentage of profits derived from sales of prints at the Hummingbird Studios web site, including public speaking engagements and exhibits, will be directed to the Esperanza! A Woman’s Hope Scholarship Fund, in addition organizations recognized for their efforts toward empowering survivors of domestic violence.
